  • 411 interview
  • PROJECTS icon 411's Tony Farinella sits down with Jonathan Tucker for an exclusive interview!

Jonathan Tucker is easily one of the most underrated male actors in Hollywood today. In his career, he has worked on such films as The Virgin Suicides, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostage, and In the Valley of Elah. In my interview with Jonathan Tucker, we talked about his new film, The Ruins, which is currently available on DVD. I hope you enjoy my interview with Jonathan Tucker.

TONY: It goes without saying that The Ruins is not your typical horror film. Is that what attracted you to the project in the first place?
Jonathan Tucker: Absolutely. It's based on a wonderful book. Scott Smith is a terrific writer and has an incredible imagination. And then the below-the-line team that was put together from Dreamworks on down. Carter Smith's short, Bugcrush, was something that disturbed me for days, and Darius Khondji is one of my favorite cinematographers. Everybody was top of the line, so to speak, and then the cast was wonderful. The whole project was very different, and it's not really a horror film. It's a bit creepier than the average story.

  • Actors I Love
  • PROJECTS icon It's a simple fact: Movie adaptations of books always pale in comparison. But is the same true when the novel's author is also the screenwriter? In short, no. Luckily for "The Ruins" (out on DVD today), having the book's author Scott B. Smith on board as the screenwriter is just one in a long list of things it's got going for it. And at the tippy-top of that list is Jonathan Tucker.

Whether you know Jonathan as the unlikely impetus for murder in "The Deep End" or as a the narrator of "The Virgin Suicides," it's undeniable that the 26-year-old is one of the most talented actors of his generation.

I recently got the chance to speak with Jonathan about "The Ruins," nude scenes, playing scared and what he calls the biggest disappointment of his career.

Pop Wrap: What made you sign on for "The Ruins?"
Jonathan: I'm a huge fan of Scott Smith's work - "A Simple Plan" was one of my favorite films and he has a terrific imagination, so I knew I would be getting into something special.

PW: Normally in a horror movie there is a masked killer as the villain. In "The Ruins," you, Jenna Malone, Laura Ramsey, Shawn Ashmore and Joe Anderson are being hunted by sinister vines. Were you worried about how that would look on screen?
Jonathan: The production team in Australia was so first-rate that I knew I wasn't getting into something cheesy. We're talking about the people behind "The Lord of the Rings" and "King Kong." The head of our special effects team started on "Blade Runner," these are very talented technicians.

  • Ruins on DVD
  • NEWS icon The Ruins is out on DVD (in region 1 - region 2 the dvd release is scheduled in September)

The unrated-cut DVD includes deleted scenes (including the original theatrical ending, which I actually prefer), a third alternate ending, commentary track, and three making-of featurettes.
