COVINGTON CROSS {1.01 PILOT}
transcripted by Hannah

Richard and William are sword fighting in the castle and destroying everything in the hall. Sir Thomas enters.
Sir Thomas: How many times have I told you?! Not in the castle!
Richard: Sorry father.
William: Sorry father.
Sir Thomas: Have you lost your minds? Look what you've done. Look what you've done!
Richard: We were only having a little fun.
Sir Thomas: Fun?! Is that all you can say.
Richard: No sir.
Sir Thomas: Than what tell me, tell me something.
William: It was his idea.
Richard: That is a lie!
Sir Thomas: Enough! Both of you. I want this place put back together now!
Sir Thomas starts to walk off.
Sir Thomas: Friar! Friar!
The friar rushes towards him.
Friar: My lord.
Sir Thomas: Where's my son?
Friar: Which one?
Sir Thomas: The only one you tutor. You are still tutoring him.
Friar: Yes, of course.
Sir Thomas: How is he progressing with his studies?
Friar: We are making progress.
Sir Thomas: Does he have an aptitude for the church.
Friar: He's working on his Latin as we speak.
The friar and Sir Thomas enter the study. Cedric is kissing a serving girl behind a book.
Sir Thomas: Latin has changed.
Cedric: Latin isn't working out for me.
Sir Thomas: It seems to be working out quite nicely. We'll talk about this later. Where's Eleanor?
Cedric: In the solar, but I wouldn't go in there.
Thomas leaves the room mumbling.
Sir Thomas: (mumbles) Not go in there. I'll do whatever I like.
The friar closes the door and Cedric resumes his studying.

Cut to the family eating in the hall.
Sir Thomas: Merciful lord, we thank thee for the bounty before us. For Edward, our King and protector. For England, our home and provider. Bless the soul of beloved Anne, good mother, good wife. And make us a family strong and united in the realm of God and man. In the name of the holy trinity and the church and King Edward. Amen.
All: Amen.
They all jump in and start eating.
Sir Thomas: There is something important to discuss, a guest will be arriving in-
No one is paying attention.
Sir Thomas: If you don't mind!
Everyone quiets.
Sir Thomas: I'm sure this will pale in comparison to your conversations, but it won't take long. A representative from the DeLacua family will be here tomorrow. And he wants to look over our business. Let's make a good impression on him. Any questions?
Cedric: Why can't I become a knight?
William and Richard laugh.
Sir Thomas: Because you're going to become a cleric.
Cedric: I wasn't meant for the church.
Sir Thomas: When Armus left, I swore and oath to your mother. That she was losing her oldest son to the Crusades at least her youngest would be spared the horrors of war. A cleric's blood is not spilled on the battlefield. We have enough knights. Now leave it.
William: To be a knight is not always what it is thought to be brother.
Richard: To be a knight is to be the most honored.
William: To be the first son is a knight to be most honored. To be anything else is to watch the first get most of the honor.
Eleanor: At least you get to be something. Women get to be nothing.
Richard: Women aren't supposed to be anything, their women.
Eleanor: How dare you say that. I can do anything you can do.
Richard: Name one thing you can do better than me.
Cedric: She rides better than you.
Eleanor: Exactly.
They all start to argue. A messenger walks in and hands a parchment to Sir Thomas. He unrolls it, reads it, and lays it on the table.
Sir Thomas: The king wants to see me.
They all quiet.
Sir Thomas: John Mullins has a proposal.
Richard: Mullins?
Sir Thomas: A plan to put our differences aside and become friendly neighbors.
Richard: He's only our neighbor because he's stolen all the land up to our border.
Cedric: He won't give up until he gets ours as well.
William: Whatever it is it will be to Mullins advantage. Why the King can't see-
Sir Thomas: We'll see what we need to see. Mullins has always been loyal to the throne. William, Richard, we ride in the morning. Cedric-
Cedric: Stay here. Entertain the Frenchman.
William and Richard smile

Cut to Sir Thomas riding out of the grounds. Eleanor and Cedric are walking beside him.
Sir Thomas: I'm counting on you Cedric. This contract is important. Charm this Frenchman. (Cedric lips the last remark in unison with his father). (To Eleanor) And try to get along with Lady Elizabeth. Please.
Eleanor nods her head
Eleanor: God speed.
Sir Thomas: Goodbye Cedric.
Richard: Keep to those studies little brother.
William: Don't worry we'll bring you back a Bible.
Eleanor: They tease you because they love you Cedric.
Cedric: You think so?
Eleanor: I know it.
Cedric: Good, because I loosened their saddle straps out of my fondness for them.
William and Richard fall of their horses and land with a thud. Eleanor looks at Cedric and smiles and shakes her head.

Back at Covington Cross.
Friar: Once inside the castle walls, soldiers emerged from the wooden horse and defeated the (he waits for Cedric's response, but he does not say anything) Trojans. Menelaus flees Ajax and Odysseus and were led by Agamemnon, the King of Mysilee, to bring back Helen who was of course Menelaus' wife.
The camera pans around to Cedric who is not interested in the lesson. The friar is talking of screen.
Friar: Who had of course been abducted by P..P..P..
Cedric mockingly lips the P sound.
Friar: Paris.
A servant enters.
Servant: A coach Master Cedric. The Frenchman.
Cedric: (To Friar) I'm so sorry to interrupt this, friar. And I was just starting to get the feel for it, too. Do hold the thought. I shouldn't be more than a life time at most.
Cedric walks out to the grounds as a coach pulls up.
Cedric: Not sure which would be worse the friar or the Frenchman.
A beautiful woman steps out of the coach.
Cedric: The friar, definitely the friar.
Genevieve: Genevieve DeLacua.
Cedric: Are you alone?
Cedric jumps on to the side of the coach and looks in.
Cedric: You are alone. You're very alone.
Genevieve: Are you feeling well?
Cedric: Most well. Very well. Well, well.
Genevieve: And you are?
Cedric: Cedric, Sir Cedric.

Cut to Cedric sword fighting with a dummy. Genevieve is sitting and watching him. William and Richard walk up.
Richard: We're taking the Frenchman off your hands. Where is he?
Cedric: I'm doing fine.
Richard: I'm sure you are, but we'll take it from here.
Cedric: I see.
Richard: So where is he?
Cedric: Right here.
Richard: Where is DeLacua?
Genevieve stands up and turns around.
Genevieve: Genevieve DeLacua.
William and Richard look at each other.

Cut to all four kids sitting next to the fireplace.
Eleanor: How could father hive me away like this?
Cedric: Maybe it won't be so bad.
Eleanor: What could possibly be good about it? What was mother like. I know that she was kind and beautiful, but what was she really like?
Cedric: Yes, what was she like?
William: Well, (laughs) she liked to sing.
Richard: Politics bored her, but she loved a good story.
William: Especially comedies.
Cedric laughs.
Richard: I never heard her complain about anything.
Eleanor: Well then she wouldn't have liked me very much.
Richard: She would have liked you more than anyone. It was courage she admired most in people. I think because she felt she had so little herself. You are the woman she wanted to be, Eleanor.
Eleanor: (pauses at the remark) What am I going to do?
Richard: Find the courage to do what you have to do.

Cut to William and Richard arguing.
William: When she arrives we'll start the negotiations. You'll set the price high, she'll protest, you remain firm. I'll draw your side, plead for reason, you shake your head no! We argue you storm off in anger. I offer a lower price at the cost of my relationship with my own brother. She accepts readily thinking she's getting a bargain. We get the contract at a premium. Father thinks we're brilliant.
Richard: Why do I have to be the bad one?
William: You're more believable.
Richard: I don't want to be the bad one.
William: Only because you don't want her to dislike you.
Richard: That's true.
William: That's selfish.
Richard: That's true.
William: I cannot believe you are willing to risk the contract for your own personal agenda.
Richard: I don't want to be the bad one.
William: It's my plan!
Richard: Well get a new plan!
William: It's a good plan!
Cedric walks up to them.
Cedric: What's the plan?
William: You're supposed to be with the friar.
Cedric: He's locked in the privy.
William: How the hell did that happen?
Cedric: I put the lock on the door when he went in. What's the plan?
Richard: I don't want to be the bad one.
William: I know!
The three start to argue. Genevieve is standing around the corner and comes out into sight. They stop arguing.

William, Richard, and Cedric are watching servants prepare their father's equipment.
Cedric: I watched Henry of Golt at a tournament last year. There was none better.
Richard: If only he'd let me fight in his place!
William: He'd never allow that. It would destroy him.
Richard: Henry of Golt is going to destroy him.

William and Richard are dueling each other with sticks.
Richard: We shouldn't have let him go.
William: And how are we going to stop him, oh great leader.
Richard: If only your talent was as sharp as your tongue.
William hits Richard hard in the ribs. Cedric starts to walk over to them. They atart to fight more. Cedric tries to break it up.
William: Let me get at him, Cedric.
Cedric: No!
Richard: Stand aside little brother or see what it's like to fight a real man.
William: Leave the boy alone.
Cedric: (to William) I'm not a boy.
Richard: He thinks he's a knight. Lets see if he can fight like one.
Cedric punches Richard in the face. All three start to fight. Eleanor pulls up driving Genevieve's carriage.
Cedric: It's Genevieve.
They all get up and dust themselves off. Eleanor reveals herself to be the driver.
Eleanor: You three fools want to fight, father is riding into Mullins' trap. Your precious Genevieve is a spy.
They jump at the carriage and look in to see Genevieve bound and gagged on the floor.
Eleanor: (to servant) Take a horse, warn everyone, the hooded men are going to burn and rob the whole village.
Servant: Yes, milady.
Eleanor: (to her brothers) We have to get into Mullins' castle.
Richard: It's fortified and it's heavily guarded.
William: We don't have enough men to attack.
The friar comes outside.
Friar: Cedric! Cedric! I've finished in the privy. History.
The friar points to a drawing of the Trojan horse.
Cedric: I've an idea.
Cut to Eleanor being helped into the carriage by Cedric. She is dressed like Genevieve.
William: You look perfect.
Eleanor: Let's go.
Cedric: We're ready.
Richard is the driver. They stop along the side of the road and throw Genevieve from the carriage.

Sir Thomas is getting ambushed by soldiers. The carriage pulls up outside of Mullins' castle.
Eleanor: If you value your necks, open the gate. I have urgent news for Lord Mullins.
Cedric: (who is at the bottom of the carriage with William} That is the worst accent.
The attendant goes to look under the carriage to see where the voice came from. Eleanor grabs his hand. He turns and has the gate opened.
